“Captain Planet Zero Energy SIPs Cottage”

SIPA and SIPA members Winter Panel Corporation, Insulspan, R-control/Allied Foam Products, and The Sunworks Company, join other others including Building Science Corporation and the Department of Energy’s Building America  Program to sponsor the Captain Planet Zero Energy SIPs Cottage, a 1,700 square foot energy-efficient structure built with SIPs.  The project demonstrates a building with net zero energy and resource impact, and yet still provide for "safe, affordable, comfortable, durable, and attractive shelter."

Less is more, zero is most.

Every home and its operation have significant impact on the environment. But there are homes with remarkably small environmental footprints. What do they look like? What features do they have? Can these homes tread lightly on the land and the global environment and be comfortable, safe, durable, and have great market value?

The Captain Planet Zero Energy SIPs Cottage is one answer to these questions.  The house is about as close as you can expect to get to net zero energy and resource impact. And yet, the house design still provides for safe, affordable, comfortable, durable, attractive shelter.

Designing and building a zero-energy, zero-resource home is not just about efficient components, it's about how these elements work together and how they work in the context of the local environment. The Captain Planet Zero Energy SIPs Cottage is meant to familiarize you with the full range of features to consider in efficient, even self-sufficient, home design and operation. It's also meant to inform you about how your choices in one aspect of efficiency are linked to others and how some of your choices will depend on your site, your local environment, and the resources they provide or require.

The Captain Planet Zero Energy SIPs Cottage addresses four main areas of environmental impact:

1.      Energy

2.      Materials

3.      Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ)

4.      Site

The community will be able to explore the fully functional demonstration home and learn how its features can make an impact on their health, the health of their family, the energy-efficiency of their home and their home's impact on the environment surrounding them. The home will debut in Atlanta , GA April 18-21, 2001 at the Atlanta Home Show, a show that hosts over 80,000 consumers over a four-day period. Once the home is demonstrated in Atlanta , it will then be moved to Washington , D.C. where it will be showcased at the National Park Service's First Annual Sustainability Fair May 3-4, 2002 .
